On Wednesday, Aug. 30, the moon is full in Pisces, the sign of the dreamer, mystic, and musician.
Pisces is a mutable water sign and the last of the 12 signs in the astrological year, so it also represents transcendence and dissolution.
The sun is opposite the moon in Virgo. Together, Virgo and Pisces make the axis of devotion. Pisces is spiritual devotion, and Virgo is acts of service.
On a full moon, there’s usually high energy, as the sun and moon are in opposition, challenging each other as if in a duel. This time, the moon is joined by Saturn. Saturn, the archetypal “father,” likes discipline and solitude.
Saturn in Pisces is like a river carving a canyon. It demands patience—and—it’s going to get the job done.
Mercury (thinking and communication) and Venus (love and money) are both retrograde. This brings another angle to Saturn’s slowdown: a looking back.
A full moon offers illumination. When we look back, we see clearly what we were blind to in the midst of the situation. We see why a circumstance was not only necessary, but maybe beneficial.
Pisces offers the support of nonlinear thinking. Let your mind wander, find some silence, and anticipate relief.
I’ve noticed everyone in my life reaching some sort of threshold in the past few weeks. For some, it was a step of maturity, like buying a home. For my parents, it was selling the camping trailer they’ve enjoyed for the past 10 years as they age out of that type of vacation. For others, it was a rock bottom—a breakup, a lost job, a health scare. Even the darkest of these moments offers a redirection to a new future. Sometimes we don’t realize we’re headed for a dead end and need the jolt of change.
It reminds me of the day in primary school when the teacher would spring on us that it was time for a new seating arrangement. Everyone would get shuffled around to new desk mates.
You can’t keep going to the old seat. Someone else is there, and your old familiar cluster of classmates aren’t there anymore anyway.
The most Piscean themes of looking back are forgiveness and gratitude for what was. By taking time to honor the threshold you’re in, you release yourself to step fully into the new reality.
This full moon is opposite my natal Part of Fortune. The Part of Fortune is not a planet, but a mathematical point calculating using the sun, moon, and rising. Most astrology apps don’t list it. I wasn’t actually familiar with it, but it represents where you’ll find material success.
When I look back on the past few new and full moons in Pisces, I see a clear narrative emerge. Each moon marked a pivot point in seeking an agent for my first novel. I have compassion for that version of myself who thought a huge paycheck was imminent, and for the current version of myself, who is choosing to keep working on my writing no matter how long it takes.
Saturn’s involvement in this full moon is a promise that hard work will pay off.
